Sting Newz Service: The Bengali Department of Kalyani University marked the birth anniversary of eminent linguist and national professor Suniti Kumar Chatterjee with the launch of the Suniti Kumar Memorial Lecture series. The event, held in the university’s premises, aimed to honor the profound contributions of the linguist to Bengali language and culture.

“Initiating this lecture series on Suniti Kumar’s birth anniversary is a unique and meaningful tribute. It will greatly benefit researchers in Bengali language and cultural studies,” said Professor Parthasarathi De, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Commerce, while inaugurating the event by lighting the ceremonial lamp.

Professor Sukhen Biswas, a Bengali linguistics expert, highlighted the significance of Suniti Kumar’s work. “In O.D.B.L., he established that Charyapada is the earliest example of Bengali literature, though its spoken form predates it significantly. This initiative serves to commemorate his invaluable contributions to the field,” he stated.

This year’s lecture topic, “Classicism in Bengali Language,” resonated with the recent recognition of Bengali as a classical language. The keynote speaker, Swami Shastrajnananda Maharaj, Secretary of Narendrapur Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, noted, “Bengali literature’s rich heritage and antiquity have earned it this prestigious status. This recognition is a source of pride for us and will inspire future generations.”

The event witnessed a turnout of nearly 400 students and researchers, with notable attendees including Sabitri Nanda Chakraborty, Prabir Pramanik, Sanjit Mondal, Shyamashree Biswas Sengupta, Tushar Patuya, Piyush Poddar, and Seema Sarkar.

The lecture series is expected to become a significant platform for scholarly discussions on the Bengali language and its heritage.
