Sting Newz Service: In response to the rising demand for legal studies, Kalyani University has introduced a postgraduate law programme (LL.M). Although law courses were previously available at the undergraduate level across four affiliated colleges, this is the first time students can pursue a master’s degree in law at the university.

For years, the university’s four affiliated colleges offered only undergraduate law courses, leading to a growing demand for a master’s programme. University Vice-Chancellor Professor Amalendu Bhuinya, announcing the course’s commencement, shared, “Around 500 students graduate in law each year from our university. The introduction of this master’s programme meets a long-held need, enabling graduates to pursue careers in the West Bengal Judicial and Legal Services and corporate law, along with other professional avenues.”

The new law course will be conducted by the Department of Jibanbyapi Shiksha O Samprasaran, which has already established the necessary facilities, including a library stocked with essential law texts and a modern computer lab. Professor Prosenjit Deb, head of the department, explained that the two-year programme will feature four core specializations: Criminal Law, Corporate Law, Constitutional Law, and Public International Law.

Esteemed professors from various institutions have been appointed to teach the course, ensuring that students receive a top-tier education. Graduates of this programme will be eligible for the UGC NET examination, which opens doors to research opportunities and academic positions, as well as qualifying for competitive exams in both the government and private sectors.

The inaugural class was held on Tuesday, where Dr. Sukhen Biswas from the Bengali Department welcomed students with roses and pens.

Dr. Biswas said, “The West Bengal Department of Higher Education granted approval for this self-financed course this year. The two-year programme, divided into four semesters, requires an investment of INR 1,20,000 per student. The first semester’s classes have started with an initial cohort of 20 students.”
